We are proud to celebrate Debate Camp’s founding director, Nick Szymanis, on receiving the Willis S. McLeese Award—a meaningful recognition of his long-standing contributions to debate education.
Since founding Debate Camp in 2002, Nick has been guided by a clear vision: to make debate accessible, challenging, and transformative for students of all backgrounds. What began as a small program has grown into a vibrant community spanning North America, shaped by Nick’s commitment to thoughtful pedagogy, mentorship, and student growth.
Nick’s influence extends far beyond curriculum design or tournament results. He has built a culture that values curiosity, respect, and confidence—one where students are encouraged not only to argue well, but to listen closely, think critically, and engage with the world around them. Generations of campers, staff, and alumni carry those lessons with them long after the summer ends.
The Willis S. McLeese Award recognizes individuals who have made a lasting impact on the debate community, and Nick’s work exemplifies that spirit. His dedication has helped countless students find their voices and discover the power of reasoned dialogue.
Congratulations, Nick, on this well-deserved honour—and thank you for everything you continue to bring to the Debate Camp community.
